Him & Her, from Albert Texas, is a bluesy, jazzy, folksy band featuring singer songwriter Brenda Freed on vocals, and guitar or piano, Michael D’Eath (DEE-uth) on diatonic and chromatic harmonica, and Duke Davis on upright bass. The full band features Curtis Clogston on pedal steel.
In 2005, Michael & Brenda’s band Texas Hot Flash won an Austin Music Award, self-released 3 CDs, performed throughout Central Texas and Southern California, and opened for the Charlie Daniels Band. Formed from those successful roots, Him & Her has since created a special musical chemistry and performed throughout the Texas Hill Country, the Midwest and in England. Duke Davis is an award winning singer songwriter, musician, producer, poet, free-lance writer, historian and cowboy. He’s had his own Western Swing Band, “Buckshot,” since 1979 and has produced over 230 recordings for dozens of artists. Him & Her has released two albums, most recently, Him & Her In the Groove (2016).

Brenda Freed has been a performing singer/songwriter in Texas since 1991 when a 9,000-mile bicycle trip beginning in her native state of Iowa ended surprisingly at the Kerrville Folk Festival where she performed in the notorious staff concert. Even though she had performed all her life, Brenda had caught the songwriting bug. She decided to stay in Texas to pursue a singer/songwriter career and to teach voice, piano and guitar privately. Since that time, she has self-released four CD’s featuring her original music and toured Texas, the Midwest, England and Ireland. Brenda instructs voice workshops at conferences and festivals and has also released two instructional vocal courses, each 2 CD sets. An experienced backup vocalist, Brenda has sung harmony on many recordings of other musicians. Her primary vocal influences are Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Raitt and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Michael D’Eath grew up in England singing in boys choirs. He moved to Texas as a teenager to pursue a career in high technology. In the 1990’s Michael chose harmonica as his primary instrument and has been playing diatonic and chromatic harmonicas since. He is an accomplished player in several musical styles which works well with the versatility of Brenda’s voice and songwriting. Michael has shared the stage with many other performers including Sara Hickman, John Inmon, Karen Abrahams and George Ensle, to name a few. Michael is also a sought-after recording session player. His primary influences are Stevie Wonder, John Mayall and Norton Buffalo.
Brenda and Michael met at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1999 and the two were married in 2000. In 2001, they formed Texas Hot Flash (THF) and won a 2005 Austin Music Award. THF self-released three CD’s, performed throughout Central Texas and Southern California, and opened for the Charlie Daniels Band at the 2005 Firefly Festival in Indiana. In 2006, Him & Her emerged from THF as a duo that has performed throughout Texas and in the Midwest and England.

“Freed and D’Eath have released a recording of original Texas music which is a solid demonstration of both vocal and instrumental talent. Brenda’s voice is pleasing, her lyrics are crisp and thoughtful, and D’Eath doesn’t commit the crime most prevalent among amateur harp players. He is a pro.” Sam Kindrick, Action Magazine, San Antonio, TX
Him & Her came full circle in 2015 when they performed at the Kerrville Folk Festival where Brenda has taught the voice workshop for several years. They also toured the Midwest playing in Iowa and Arkansas.
