Him & Her is a bluesy, jazzy, folksy band playing original music, featuring singer songwriter Brenda Freed on vocals, and guitar or piano, Michael D’Eath (DEE-uth) on diatonic and chromatic harmonica, and Duke Davis on upright bass. Him & Her also play as a full band (adding e.g. percussion, pedal steel, and/or dobro) when warranted by the venue.
Brenda has been performing original music in Texas, the Midwest, England and Ireland since 1991. By 2001 she had released 4 CDs and formed Texas Hot Flash, including Michael. In 2005, Texas Hot Flash, won an Austin Music Award, self-released 3 CDs, performed throughout Central Texas and Southern California, and opened for the Charlie Daniels Band. With these successful roots, Him & Her has since created a special musical chemistry and performed throughout the Texas Hill Country, the Midwest and in England. In 2015 Duke Davis joined Him & Her on upright bass. Duke is an award-winning singer songwriter, musician, producer, poet, free-lance writer, historian and cowboy. He’s had his own Western Swing Band, “Buckshot,” since 1979 and has produced over 230 recordings for dozens of artists. He is in high demand as a bassist having played with Mike Blakely the last six years, as well as with Him & Her. Couple Michael’s tasty harmonica playing with Brenda’s soulful voice and Duke’s upright bass and you get a powerful trio sound that is sure to delight listening audiences. Him & Her has released two albums, Him & Her On Solid Ground (2013) and Him & Her In the Groove (2016), and are in final stages of a 2018 release, Him & Her Do Texas Women, produced by Duke Davis.
In addition to their lives as performing musicians, Brenda & Michael have spent their time in other music related professions and activities, and serving local and national non-profit organizations. Brenda has an MA in Music Education & Music Therapy, and pioneered the Music Therapy program at the University of Iowa Hospitals. She also teaches voice workshops at national & international conferences and festivals, as well as privately via Skype and in her studio in Blanco TX, and has produced a successful line of Effortless Music Instruction materials.
Brenda served as a board member of Youth Taking Charge ’s (501c3) including administering residential camps for ‘at risk’ youth and providing music therapy activities. She also created and hosted a community service event called the Young Artist Performance Incubator (YAPI), open mic for youth age 18 and under in Wimberley, TX for 10 years. YAPI is now an annual event at the Kerrville Folk Festival since 2013. Brenda has also co-written a children’s book, Mackenzie’s Monsters – Alzheimer’s Disease, including 3 original songs, which is in the publishing stage.
Michael teaches harmonica when the opportunity arises and is active in organizing the harmonica workshop at the Kerrville Folk Festival. He is also a former board member and chairman of the Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation (501c3) and, currently, President of the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica (SPAH – also 501c3), both of which have vibrant youth programs. Him & Her combine teaching (harmonica, voice and vocal harmony) and performance when appropriate for festivals or other performance/workshop situations.
“Him & Her cover multiple genres with style, tight melodies, clever lyrics and great harp playing. From Traditional folk, to blues and good ole’ Texas Swing, Him & Her will keep your toes a tappin’ and put a smile on your face.” Tom Tranchilla, Songwriter’s Studio, KPFT, Houston, TX
In 2013 Him & Her released their debut CD, Him & Her On Solid Ground. Produced by Brenda, the record is musically rich with arrangements that explore the depth of the duo’s musical collaboration.
“Freed and D’Eath have released a recording of original Texas music which is a solid demonstration of both vocal and instrumental talent. Brenda’s voice is pleasing, her lyrics are crisp and thoughtful, and D’Eath doesn’t commit the crime most prevalent among amateur harp players. He is a pro.” Sam Kindrick, Action Magazine, San Antonio, TX
Him & Her came full circle in 2015 when they performed at the Kerrville Folk Festival where Brenda has taught the voice workshop for several years. They also toured the Midwest playing in Iowa and Arkansas. While in Iowa, Him & Her participated in the Folk Alliance Regional Midwest Conference (FARM) where Brenda taught Effortless Singing and Effortless Harmony Singing.
Him & Her In the Groove, the duo’s second CD, was released in January of 2016 and is a collection of 10 groovy, bluesy, jazzy tunes; five written or co-written by Brenda.
