Freed Until Daylight Lyrics

Freed Until Daylight

 1. Floating Free

Brenda Freed, Bob Clark

New wings unfurl
Like the dreams of a little girl
Multicolored magic swirls
Through the air catching in my curls
Ooooeeeeeeeee, look at me
I’m an angel floating free

I am dancing light
Reflecting on doves in flight
No more stones in my path
All my sorrows fading fast
Ooooeeee, look at me
I’m an angel floating free

I am sweet vision
On your dream horizon
Feel my naked eiyes
Touch across sunlit skies
Ooooeeee, look at me
I’m an angel floating free

I’ll come to you in your need
My sweet love, don’t you weep
Don’t you weep, Don’t weep for me
Ooooeeee, look at me
I’m an angel floating free

2. One Call

Brenda Freed & Suzanne Chesshire

I call you on the phone
I hear long distance in your tone
Even through this wire
I can tell you’re not alone
Well, is it secretary’s day
Or does she always laugh that way
Well honey, I’ve got business of my own

Chorus

I’m makin’ one call to my lawyer
And a long call to my best friend
I’m makin’ one short call to mister dark and tall
But I’m never callin’ you again
So you can turn on your fax
Sit back and relax
The papers are comin’ through
And when you check your E-mail you’ll find got to hell
‘Cause our communicating days are through

You’re puttin’ me on hold
And my coffee latte is gettin’ cold
You’re takin’ good care of your business
I’ve been told
Well business must be great
But honey, I can’t wait
‘Cause sittin’ home alone is getting’ pretty old

Chorus

3. Everybody Knows

Brenda Freed & Bob Clark

I tried not to hurt you
Tried to keep you intact
You stole my heart
Now I’m taking it back
If I were a scorpion
You’d expect me to sting
Everybody knows that’s a scorpion’s thing

You want me to love you,
That I can do
Everybody knows I’m in love with you
If I were a redbird, you’d expect me to sing
Everybody knows that’s a redbird’s thing

I am a scorpion, I’m a redbird too
I’m a woman, I’m in love with you

You ask me for forever
Well you’re out of luck
Forever is that place where the angels get stuck
If I were an eagle, you’d expect me to soar
Everybody knows what an eagle’s wings are for

You can take what I offer, you can’t have the rest
I may not give you everything
but I’ll give you my best
If I were a river, you’d expect me to flow
Everybody knows that a river’s got to go

I am and eagle, I’m a river too
I’m a woman, I’m in love with you

I am a scorpion, I’m a red bird too
I’m an eagle, I’m a river
I’m a woman, I’m in love with you

4. Simple Words

Brenda Freed & Bob Clark

Suzanne grew up in a house full of pain
With nothing to lose and nothing to gain
Her mama was weak, her daddy was mean
She left them behind when she turned seventeen
Young Suzanne took flight
in the middle of the night
Left the window wide open,
she slammed the door tight

She hit the city alone and afraid
She couldn’t regret the choices she’d made
He was tall dark and ugly
in ways she could not see
With nothin’ but empty where his heart oughta be
His words were simple.  It’s simple words that kill
They pulled like a magnet on her iron will

Step out of the bright light
Dance with me in the sweet night
I’ll give you what you’re after
I’ll fulfill all your dreams

He treated her well ’til the money ran out
That’s when she learned
what the streets are about
Now she’s waltzing with strange men
in shadows of the night
You’ll never see her
where the street lights are bright
Her words are simple.  It’s simple words that kill
They pull like a magnet on your iron will

Step out of the bright light
Dance with me in the sweet night

I’ll give you what you’re after
I’ll fulfill all your dreams

Suzanne grew up in a house full of pain
With nothing to lose and nothing to gain

5. You’ll Never Know

Brenda Freed & Bob Clark

Early morning as the sun rose
We walked to the river without our clothes
Stood on the banks of the Blanco
Watched the pale moon go.

As the morning sky turned blue
I confess I did too
There was really nothing you could do
Some walls you can’t break through

Chorus

You’ll never know what you’ve found
‘Til the walls come falling down
You’ll never know until daylight
What was lost in the dark of night

The night was short, our love was sweet
You really knocked me off my feet
How much was truth? How much deceit?
Was that a trick, or was it a treat?

Sometimes the fear grows so strong
I don’t know what went wrong
Why with the coming dawn
I missed you before you were gone

Chorus

6. I Need Your Memories

Brenda Freed & Bob Clark

Lightning strikes at the dawn’s first light
I reach but find you gone
Storm clouds gather in my mind
As thunder greets the dawn
I love you now as I loved you then
My heart cannot forget
And though I’ve tried and I’ve tried my friend
My mind cannot forgive, Oh no

The quiet nights I’ve spent alone
The taste of salty tears
I still miss you, my sweet, sweet love
Even after all these years
Red roses need the rain
Like a drunkard needs his wine
Everybody’s got their needs
And your memories are mine

I need your memories
I need to remember you
I need your memories

Red roses need the rain
Like a drunkard needs his wine
Everybody’s got their needs
And your memories are mine

I need your memories
I need to remember you
I need your memories

7. Texas Hill Country Blues

Brenda Freed, John Row, Val Roessling

Shiner Bock and Rolling Rock
Doors with latches that never lock
Where everybody plays guitar
And Mandolins in roadside bars
Where Texas women with shining eyes
Wear jeans that hug the thighs

Chorus

Where you’ve got those
Soon to be leavin’
You’ve got those soon to be grievin’
You’ve got those soon to be leavin’
Texas Hill Country Blues

Where Southern sun and Gulf Stream wet
Come together to make you sweat
Where wild flowers red, yellow and blue
Feed birds with feathers of every hue
Where the deer run wild and the butterflies
Fill the space between the earth and skies

Chorus

Where pick-up trucks no longer shine
And you know each one served its time
Where people stop to say hello
And aren’t in too much hurry to go
Where there’s twisted trees and limestone tracks
And rivers and creeks to call you back

Chorus

8. You Help Me Carry On

Brenda Freed & Bob Clark

I’m tryin’ real hard to be who I am
If I can’t be me, tell me who can
I’m tryin’ , I’m  flyin’,  I’m spinnin’ around
My feet are still planted here on the ground

Chorus:

You are the only one,
You keep me safe, you keep me warm
You are the only one, You help me carry on

Storm clouds are comin’,  it feels like rain
Thunder echoes deep in my brain
Oh I’d like to run, I’d like to hide
I can no longer tell what’s in or outside

Chorus

My spirit is soaring like a hawk in the breeze
My feet are still planted deep as the trees
The hard winds are blowin’ dry desert sands
As it is now, so it began

Chorus

9. Tattoo

Brenda Freed & Bob Clark

I was sittin’ in  the lounge
at the auto center at Sears
It was just bad breaks that had landed me here
I was bored there was nothin’ to do
I’d read all the magazines and flyers too
That’s when I noticed the lady with the cool tattoo
A sensuous face looked at me
from just behind her right knee

The tattooed hair swirled around her calf
When she caught me starin’ I said with a laugh

Chorus

Sometimes I wish I had a tattoo
It’s one thing I’ve never been brave enough to do
A parrot on my arm red, green and blue
Or a heart on my chest that says I love you
Sometimes I wish I had a tattoo

Where would it go, what would it be?
That’s the part that’s always troubled me.
I’ve thought about it but I can’t decide
Would I put it on my front or my back side
A work of art in which I could take pride
I could put it on my arm for the world to see
Or some place private for my lover and me
I once came close, I was in the chair
But I couldn’t decide which part to bare

Chorus

I could get a tattoo that just rubs on
But I think I’d miss it when it was gone

Sometimes I wish I had a tattoo
It’s one thing I’ve never been brave enough to do
A parrot on my arm red, green and blue
Or a heart on my chest that says I love you
Sometimes I wish I had a tattoo
Sometimes I wish I had a tattoo
Sometimes I wish I had a tattoo.

10. He Said, She Said

Brenda Freed, Bob Clark, Val Roessling

He said I never knew
Never knew a woman who could move like you
Never knew a woman
who could do the things you do
Never knew anyone who would go this far
You don’t know how different,
How different you really are

Chorus

He said, she said, He’s an artist in bed
I just smile, nod my head
‘cause everyone’s an artist, It just takes practice
Everyone’s an artist, You just need a canvas

Yes, you are an artist, I am a priestess
You are the famine, I am the feast
Look to me for comfort, you will suffer
Look to me to nourish, and you will starve

Chorus

I am a seeker true believer
in the virtues of the flesh
I will take your lust, I will take your passion
I will take your violence and your tenderness

Instrumental

Chorus

He said I never knew
Never knew a woman who could move like you
Never knew a woman
could make me feel the way you do
I didn’t want to be anything special,
I didn’t want to be the best
All I wanted was an escape,
An escape from my loneliness

Chorus

I am a seeker true believer
in the virtues of the flesh
I will take your lust, I will take your passion
I will take your violence and your tenderness

11. Walk Upon the Land

Brenda Freed, Suzanne Chesshire, Val Roessling

We once rocked out in the ocean
We loved the motion of the waves
It was where we’d hide, we lived and died
It was our cradle and our grave

One day we climbed out of the ocean
To watch the greening of the land
We left behind our water brothers
We left our footprints in the sand

Chorus

If Jesus walked upon the water
It was so we could understand
If we live by love alone
The world will be our home
And we can walk upon
Walk upon, walk upon
Walk upon the land

Look in the eyes of your sister
You can’t resist her call
She’s the dreamer of time
The singer of rhyme
No gift of love is ever too small
We reach deep into the waters
Pearls are falling from our hands
We are the sons, we are the daughters

We trust the world as best we can

Chorus

If Jesus walked upon the water
It was so we could understand
If we live by love alone
The world will be our home
And we can walk upon
Walk upon, walk upon
Walk upon the land

12. One Day

Brenda Freed, Bob Clark, Linda Sriro

Chorus

I work one day for my soul
Six days for a dollar
And in between times I try to be a good mother

I wake up in the morning
Get the kids off to school
Start a load of laundry
leave for work before it’s through
Eight hours on my feet down at the factory
Stampin’ our parts for some machine
that I have never seen

Chorus

Five o’clock I’m at the daycare
Pickin’ up kids (Pickin’ up kids)
Six o’clock I’m servin’ supper
Servin’ the meals (servin’ the meals)
Then I do a little homework
Helpin’ ‘em work (Helpin’ ‘em work)
And I tuck those kids in bed
Sayin’ good night (sayin’ goodnight)
Now I should clean the kitchen

But I turn on the TV instead
‘Cause I need a little time
to spend outside my head

Chorus

There’s a man there on the TV
From the government up in DC
Talkin’ about the wages of sin
in the land of prosperity
And I’m thinkin’ to myself
how some things never change
The men cuttin’ the aid to unwed mothers
Are those tryin’ to slip between your covers

Chorus
